The car jitters and coughs, and its much suffering engine stalls. Janice curses like a longshoreman and turns the key in ignition harder, but suddenly she freezes and turns to look at you with a growing horror. "The key broke in the lock!" "Don't worry!" Daniel yells and starts scampering over the seats to push himself to the front. "I can hotwire it in a jiffy, no prob!" You lose your nerves and slip out of the vehicle, taking half running steps while gesticulating wildly at your friends. "We don't have time for that, come on! We'll escape in Joe's car!" "If you can call that a car," Daniel starts, but then the swarm of meatles bursts over the cliff and overtakes you. You can feel their cold bodies brushing against your shins as the chittering horde washes over the ground, nibbling at your toes and clawing at your legs clumsily. Nearby Joe curses like a bike messenger and swats the tide of bugs with his baton and shield, but more and more keep piling on him. "Oh for the love of goodness why hasn't anyone invented shoes yet!" he yells, kicking away the greediest ones as they try to climb on him. His moped car lies close by, unattended. Now what? |

Grab the pickaxe and cut a hole in the monster's hide. Hopefully the bugs will find fresh meat a more alluring meal than you.

Stop. Drop. ROLL A BUNCH, CRUNCH! Do the lizard screech that all bugs know and fear. Grab the pickaxe and cut a hole in the monster's hide. Hopefully the bugs will find fresh meat a more alluring meal than you.  You swing your pickaxe and split open the monster’s tender underbelly, spilling out all the squishy goodies inside. The meatles instantly scurry past you to feed on the spoils, bumping against and climbing over each other with their stubby bodies and legs, ignoring you completely. You have barely a moment to gather your bearings when you hear the thudding sounds of approaching footsteps, and then you are whisked away in Daniel’s meaty arms. He makes yelping worry noises all the way back as he carries you to the car, and you think to yourself that for all his faults he is great to have around at times. Janice floors it and leaves behind the grisly scene in a cloud of dust. You drive in silence for a while, still too hopped up on adrenaline, but then pull over to check yourselves. She steps back and forth fuming before addressing you. “What was that about!? Losing your temper like that, the way you blew up at that officer, then rolled around in those meatles like a bar drunk. You could’ve gotten yourself in a big trouble!” “I dunno,” you say in a voice that is carefree enough to be annoying. You still feel the rush of what you did in your chest. That gives her a stop. She stares at you, arms crossed, before pointing at you. “You have unaddressed anger issues, you know that?” Hearing that makes you a little angry, but you don’t say anything. “I’ve seen it before but didn’t want to say anything until now. You need to work on them, for your and everyone else’s sake.” She pauses to think. “In a healthy manner, that is!” Now you are a little more angry, and want to say something. |

You make a petulant face. “Your mom has anger issues.” Janice huffs. “Oh real mature, Viv, real mature.” “I’m plenty mature, I’m the dependable one remember?” “Sweetie, no you’re not. You just say that you’re being dependable whenever you want to put off making a decision and instead keep doing what you always were doing, even when you hate it and it’s eating you up inside.” “That’s not-” “Viv, would a dependable person be as behind with rent as you are?” "You know Janice, you're not exactly in a position to give life advice yourself." Have a cigarette to calm your nerves before you say something you’ll regret later You are about to snap at her that you are not going to take life advice from someone wearing spandex shorts to work, but then fall silent before you say something you can’t take back. Instead you start rolling a cigarette to calm your nerves. You need time to think what your thoughts are. You are being defensive, and who wouldn’t be when confronted with such accusations, but that doesn’t mean that she’s wrong. You are unhappy, deeply so, but it can’t all be the fault of everyone else around you, can it? Vivian: My whole life is super stressful right now! I haven't had a good rest till now, and we were supposed to have a fun little trip and get some nice juicy meat but we got called over by the cops and now there's meatles all over the place! Of course I'm mad! Vivian: unleash your inner Aggretsuko. "You are right, Janice. It has been for ages and no one wants to talk about it!” You draw breath and continue, but this time with the slow menace of a dawning realization. “It’s not that my sleep schedule sucks, or my job sucks, or my dating life sucks--not your fault Daniel, you’re cool--just because I don’t try hard enough to change myself. They suck for everyone because of things that we cannot change.” “Viv, you are being impossible right now.” Janice crosses her arms. “The only thing that is impossible here is your color coordination! Why doesn’t anyone listen to me!” You breathe heavily as Janice watches you in silence. “I see,” she says curtly and turns away. You hear the beep of Joe’s moped car and he leans out of the window. “Hey, you look like you’ve had a rough day.” “You could say that.” “I didn’t get the chance to thank you, but I think it was really brave what you did back there. Do you need a lift somewhere?” |

I feel like this is one of those instances where you take the ride offer and just tell them to drive. A good long drive is a great way to vent and maybe bring some perspective.
