The driver rolls up eventually in a nondescript Black Chevy Whatsicalled. The two of you climb in the back and Billie gives the driver the directions.
You lay your head on Billie's shoulder, trying to let the drone of asphalt lull you into a nap.
Traffic is fairly heavy, even for this time of day. Even more concerning, you see national guard trucks intermingled in the traffic.
"... you don't think that maybe I caused this?"
Billie gives you an incredulous glance
"How so?"
"Things start going crazy just as I uncover this magical doorknob."
"That's just a coincidence."
"Billie...there was this dream."
"Dreams are just..."
"I made the other world in my dreams"
You sit up straight, putting your hands in your lap, not knowing what to do with them
"There was this voice, it asked me if I wanted power."
"I think there is something out there...and it is curious about us."
You find your self rambling on for several minutes.
About the dream.
About the voice.
The power it offered.
The world it crafted around you.
What it said
What it promised.
Billie tries to digest this, coughs and clears her throat.
"That's a whole bunch to take in."
"But you haven't heard from this voice during the day, and those Marvel Cosplayers look like were able to handle the situation."
"But what if more of those monsters start showing up?"
You try to hide the worry in your voice, but cracks are starting to show up.
Billie takes a deep breath
"If they start showing up, then by the looks of it, heroes are going to show up."
"Maggie, you've got a doorway you can summon to some sort of pocket world."
"Maybe your gift is just a symptom of what's going on."
"And if that's the case, this other world might be helpful."
"But we don't even know what that world is like."
"Then it's our duty to explore it and set up some sort of camp there."
"The world was on fire even before today."
"Now it's burning in a whole new and violent way"
You rest your head back on Billie's shoulder.
"Should we get more people involved, or should it just be us three."
"I think we may need to bring in more people, maybe bring in some other students, people we trust with a secret."
"But, it's your world, it's your call."
You spend the rest of the drive in quiet contemplation, considering what should be done from here.
At the very least, Dr. Vargunza does not come to mind at any moment.
You arrive home and the smell of Thai food hit you in the face.
Zeke is standing over a veritable feast spread over the dining room table.
"Billie texted me and I ordered from your favorite place. I got everything you like. Pad Thai, Sticky Rice Pudding, Larb."
"Let's dig in and plan how we are going to tame the first Earthly frontier of the 21st Century"
